Nairn - Nairn District
UKNIWM Ref no. 5899 &8721

The Nairn war memorial is a tall freestone fluted classical column with Roman ionic capital set on an unusual octagonal pedestal which rests on a low plinth. A wreath, thistle, rose and shamrock are carved in relief around the capital.
The monument is located in gardens at the junction of Cawdor Street and Millbank Crescent.

I will post the roll of honour when I have decoded my photo's.

Two of the benches were presented in 1993 (75th anniversary of the end of the Great War) by the Nairn Seaforth Club and RBL respectively.

I will also enquire whether or not there is the intention to add to the memorial the name of Flt Lt Al Squires, a former resident of Nairn, who was killed in Afghanistan - see my signature.

I will provide copies of the photograph of individual's names if required. Some parts are beginning to weather.

I will correct some of my mistakes above at the earliest opportunity.

Looking into Isobel MACKINTOSH with the help of Jim Strawbridge of GWF. I was interested that a woman was the first name on the memorial.

I'll get back with any details.

The only woman listed on the Clyne War Memorial is also given first position in an otherwise alphabetical list.

I have just sent the following to the Nairn Ward Forum of The Highland Council.

"Although I am not an inhabitant of Nairn, I can find no other forum in which to pose my question; so please allow a little latitude.

Nairn has, since the end of the Great War, commemorated the men and women of the town who have given their lives in the service of their country - including conflicts since the end of the Second World War.

Flt Lt Allan Squires died on 2 Sep 06 in Afghanistan, along with 13 other members of Crew3 No 120 Sqn Royal Air Force. Flt Lt Squires has yet to be commemorated on the Nairn War Memorial.

Can you give me details of when (or who to contact if this is not council business) his name will be added to your memorial? Moreover, if it is not the council's intention to add his name to the memorial, I would like details of your reasoning.

Your help is appreciated."

I will post any response.

Folks, I forgot to post my findings re: Isobel.

Thanks to Jim Strawbridge on the GWF:

Isabel MacIntosh was the daughter of Mr A.R. MacIntosh of Glenlyon Lodge, Nairn and Kincorth, Forres, Morayshire. She had received her four years training at the Prince of Wales’ General Hospital, London and volunteered for service at the outbreak of war. From 1914 to 1916 she served in hospitals at Wimereux, Calais and Le Torquet. In 1917 she was appointed as Sister at Bermondsey Military Hospital, Ladywell. She had been night superintendant there before becoming sister in charge and she served there until her death from acute influenza/pneumonia on the 10th July 1918 aged 31. She was known affectionally as “Sister Mac” by her colleagues and patients. She had been awarded the Royal Red Cross (2nd Class). (copyright - Jim Strawbridge 2007)

The Nairn Ward Manager of The Highland Council got back to me regarding the addition of Flt Lt Al Squires to the Nairn War Memorial. (Her response was quite quick - I've just taken time to add it here!)

She informed me that the council are responsible for coordinating the arrangements for Remembrance Day services and for keeping the area nice - they intend to plant flowers in June - they are not responsible for the addition of names. She suggested contacting the RBL.

I have done and will post their response.

RBL were unable to help:

'The Royal British Legion has no jurisdiction whatsoever in the process of adding names to existing War Memorials. The adding of new names to War Memorials is a very complicated subject.

I would strongly recommend that you seek further guidance from the War Memorial Trust, they are experts on matters concerning War Memorials , their contact details:'

I will take their advice.

Furthermore, John Burnett has suggested that I contact the Nairn Councillors direct - sounds like a great idea!

As ever, I will keep you informed.

The War Memorial Trust responded:

"Dear Mr Roxburgh,

WAR MEMORIALS TRUST

Thank you for contacting War Memorials Trust, the national charity dedicated to the protection and conservation of our war memorial heritage.

As the creation of war memorials has traditionally been organised locally, with there being no central directives or government funding, the question of who is or is not commemorated and the form in which their details are recorded is usually held to be a local matter. There are no definitive ‘rules’ for the names included on war memorials. This is why some war memorials include those who died of wounds or disease (during or after a war) as well as those killed in action, or include civilian alongside service casualties. The decision about who was commemorated was made locally and so continues to be a local decision.

Please note that the War Memorials (Local Authorities’ Powers) Act of 1923 and subsequent amendments allow for the correction of errors in a war memorial’s inscription and additions to make a war memorial serve for conflicts subsequent to that for which it was erected. The provisions of the War Memorials (Local Authorities’ Powers) Act would therefore enable the local council to add or correct names on any war memorial within its area, whether it owns the memorial or not. However, one consideration is the status of the existing war memorial. Some war memorials are listed structures, i.e. included on the statutory list of buildings of architectural or historic interest. This does not necessarily mean that they cannot be changed, but that listed building consent may be needed from the local planning authority.

If you wish to have Flt Lt Squires’ name added to the memorial in Nairn, then I would suggest that you contact the Conservation Officer at the local authority (normally in the Planning Department) about this.

I should also mention that War Memorials Trust administers the Small Grants Scheme which can help fund various war memorial projects across the UK, including the addition of names to existing war memorials. The scheme can fund up to 50% of eligible costs, up to a maximum of £2500. You can find further information about the grant scheme on our website, www.warmemorials.org.

I hope that this information answers your query, but if you have any further questions please do not hesitate to contact me.

Yours sincerely,

Miss Nancy Treves
Administrator"

Furthermore, I have sent the following (individually and collectively) to Nairn councillors and will, of course, post their response.

"Dear Provost and Councillors,

Flight Lieutenant Allan Squires was until 2 September 2006 a resident of Nairn; his widow and children remain in Nairn. Allan was killed along with 13 other members of the crew of Nimrod XV230 whilst in support of Operation HERRICK in Afghanistan on 2 September 2006. Nairn has honoured its servicemen and women who have died in the service of their country since the Great War by naming them on its War Memorial; Flight Lieutenant Allan Squires is the exception to that rule. Regardless of the politics surrounding the United Kingdom's involvement in Afghanistan, it is only right that Nairn continues to honour the servicemen and women who have paid the ultimate sacrifice and I ask you to do your utmost to ensure the addition to the Nairn War Memorial of Flight Lieutenant Allan Squires.

Yours aye,

Roxy"

An almost immediate response from Councillor Liz MacDonald from Nairn. She agrees that Al should be added to the War Memorial and, although she is unsure of the process, can see no show stoppers!

I'll keep you all informed - but it is looking good.
