Markinch - Kirkcaldy District
Does not appear to have a UKNIWM listing

The Markich war memorial tall and slim freestone pedestal surmounted with a tall pillar with four sheild on each face near the capital and crowned with a small cross. The monument is closely surrounded by a low castellated freestone wall. The figure of Saint George trampling Dragon is carved in high relief on the face of the pedestal, and a similar figure of a saint is carved on the rear face. The names of the WWI dead are listed on four bronze panels set on the inner face of the surrounding wall. The names of the WWII dead are listed on a bronze panel set into the rear face of the pedestal.
The monument stands in a small garden in Balbirnie Street.

Physical Description

Pedestal surmounted by square shaft and a small cross. It is enclosed by four sections of crenellated style stone wall. Each has a bronze plaque containing the WW1 names on the crenellated top. WW2 names are on a bronze plaque placed below the WW2 dedicatory inscription.

Under cross are four shields, set one on each face, showing a saltire, a thistle, the town arms and St George. Sculpture of St. George is carved in relief above the WW1 dedicatory inscription on 6 o'clock face. Sculpture of St Drostan is carved in relief above the WW2 inscription on the 12 o'clock face.

Thanks to Ken Wilkie for information, architect was Sir Robert Lorimer.

Markinch Soldier Killed
Mr and Mrs Thomas Law, Croft Crescent, Markinch, have received War Office confirmation that their eldest son, L./ Bomb. John Law, R.A., has been killed action in Normandy.
Two other sons are serving overseas.
L. /Bomb. Law was previously employed by D. Grieve & Son, joiners, Markinch.

GNR. SAMUEL HUME, R.F.A.
Samuel Hume – age 40 – Gunner (28627) "F" Battery, 14th Brigade, Royal Horse Artillery.
Samuel had served with the Imperial Yeomanry in the South African War and then had joined the RHA. After his time had expired he became a coachman with Mr Cutlar-Ferguson of Craigdarroch, Dumfries. In 1911 he and his family were living in Markinch in Fife where he was a coachman and as a reservist he was mobilised in August 1914, rejoining his old regiment.
Born 1877 in Dumfries.
Son of the late Hugh and Catherine Hume of Ellangowan Lodge, Dumfries.
Husband of Jessie Hume of Kirkbrae, Markinch, Fife.
Killed in Action – 28 July 1917.
Commonwealth War Grave – Coxyde Military Cemetery, Belgium.
Also named on the Dumfries War Memorial.
