Elie - Fife

The Elie war memorial is in the form of a roadside shrine of classical design which is set into the corner of the kirkyard wall. The shrine is flanked on either side by walls incorporating benches and ballustrades and which are terminated by tall classical pillars.
The commemoration and names of the WWI dead are listed on freestone tablets set into the face of the shrine. The WWII dead are listed on two bronze plaques set on the faces of the two flanking walls.
The memorial stands at the junction of Park Place and Main Street.
Sorry about the terrible quality of the photograph but I'll use it for now until a better one is available.

One very unusual and interesting feature of this memorial is its listing of the occupations of the WWI casualties.

Above the Great War panel is inscribed;

TO THE GLORIOUS MEMORY
OF THE MEN FROM ELIE & EARLSFERRY
WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WAR

and below it;

THEY DID THEIR STERN DUTY AND DIED GREATLY IN THE DOING OF IT
AND IN OUR HEARTS
THEIR NAME LIVETH FOR EVER MORE

I think that, although unusual, adding their occupations was a nice touch. Brings home just what ordinary men, ploughmen, joiners, etc. did & achieved.

Thanks for that Mark, if I'd known you had such good up to date photos I'd have left it to you.
I've included Able Seaman Crowley on the list at the top. Do you have a pic of the left hand panel?

One of the First World War names was not a local. He was the minister in Elie Parish Church between 1907 and 1914 and is listed on that memorial too.

MONTEITH, WILLIAM NEVE
Rank: Lieutenant
Regiment/Service: Rifle Brigade
Unit Text: 6th Bn. attd. 2nd Bn.
Date of Death: 25/09/1915
Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead
Grave/Memorial Reference: Panel 10.
Memorial: PLOEGSTEERT MEMORIAL

He is also listed on the memorial in St Ninan's Church Moniaive and the Moniaive Institute where his father was the minister. There is a copy of the copy of the Moniaive Church plaque in Glencairn church

As a church minister he is also listed on the Ministers Memorial in St Giles, Edinburgh under the Church of Scotland Combatants section

Finally there is a graveyard memorial of Monteith and his brother here

Adam

Hi, I'm not sure where to start so here goes. i came across this site through a tag on the photo sharing website flickr. I noticed my name on a tag and it took me into the photo of the Elie memorial. on the momorial, and the reason I am on here, is a namesake of mine. Now Elie is in Fife and I am a Fifer born and bred and I am wondering if this Andrew Sunter on the memorial is in anyway related to me, but i dont have a clue where or how to find out. the reason I think we may be related is that the surname is fairly unusual and also that his forenames Andrew and Alexander (i found out from another site that the middle initial on the memorial is wrong and that his middlename is Alexander) crop up throughout my family history as far back as i know. my grandfather was Alexander, I have an uncle called Alexander, my brother's middlename is Alexander and so on

Anyone know where i might begin to find out if we are related?

Hi Andrew
The memorial shows his unit as CEF - Canadian Expeditionary Force.
On his service record at the Library and Archives of Canada www.collectionscanada.gc.ca
Andrew Bowie Sunter born 23/3/1883 at Elie. His next of kin is his wife Isabella is residing at 53 King St. Montrose, Forfarshire.
Interestingly there are two other Sunters, both Alexander, a father and son born Paisley 1877 and 1897 and both appear to have survived.

Good Luck with your research.

Andrew has posted a request for information in the Queries and Requests section - I would suggest all discussion go there in order to avoid duplication.

It looks like this memorial has just been given a duplicate number on UKNIWM - '58301'

Possibly a photo of it's unveiling? A postcard sent through the mail in September 1922. Obviously pre-WW2 additions.
