The cottage (72 Lochend Road) is a private residence. According to Historic Scotland's website, it was build as a nurse's cottage. This is an unusual, but not unique (e.g. Howwood in Renfrewshire), form of memorial.
What is more unusual is the timing of this memorial. Again according to Historic Scotland, it was dedicate on 11th November 1933. I'd say this was substantially later than most memorials. The cost was £800, of which £300 came from public subscription and £500 from Smith & McLean Ltd (a local steel mill).
The architect for the project was Gavin Lennox, who I notice was married to a nurse himself.
I'm glad this cottage, the gatepiers, gates and railing have listed status, since (as the photographs above shows), the memorial aspect of the work is very tastefully done. |
