The memorial was by monumental masons Messrs. Scott & Rae of Glasgow. The company daybook had the following entry:
Order No. 5908, Portmahomack, Grey obelisk, Erected October 1921, DayBook 379.

TARBAT

The war memorial for the parish of Tarbat was unveiled by Col. Mackenzie of Ord. It is erected on a commanding site south of Portmahomack, and has a massive base and die, with polished granite tablets inscribed with the names of the 48 fallen belonging to the parish, surmounted by a tall, square obelisk bearing carved flag. The Rev. E. Fraser read the list of names, and the Rev. J. MacMorland offered the dedicatory prayer. Dr Pyle committed the memorial to the charge of the Parish Council.

"Killed in action on 12th March, Private John R.F. Matheson, 1st Battalion H.L.I., youngest son of the late Rev Dugald Matheson, Tarbat, Ross-shire, and beloved husband of B. Matheson, Foley Street, Port Arthur, Ontario."

"Mrs J.D. Ross, Portmahomack, has received the following from the chaplain of the 1st H.L.I. -"I much regret to have to tell you that your brother, Private J. Matheson, was killed on the morning of the 12th while he was gallantly carrying ammunition up to the firing line. He and another engaged in the same work met the same end.""

"Private John Ewing, 1st Seaforth Highlanders, son of mr John Ewing, the headmaster of the public school, Pormahomack, was killed on May 1. He was 25 years of age. He was previously employed in the retail department of Messrs Mann, Bryars' drapery establishment, Glasgow."
