|
|
I spotted a Roll of Honour in the Ettrick Parish Church yesterday and it looks like it was one of a mass produced batch sent out to all the Church of Scotland kirks.
It's the first of its type I've seen but would this suggest that ALL Church of Scotland kirks would have been sent these "blanks" after the Great War?

Interesting. I'd posted in the Ettrick thread that as it was called the European War 1914 it was an early honour roll. I haven't seen anything like that up this neck of the woods so far. |

Mark,
I would agree with you on this.
It may have been an early issue as the Ettrick version had pencilled names listed which goes from 1 to 28 and then extra names are squeezed in along the bottom and up one side.
If the Roll had been compiled post 1918 surely they would have known all the names for inclusion. _________________

It is my hunch that these were used as working documents for the compilation of the eventual 'proper' memorials. When the memorials were unveiled, the rolls were no longer needed and disposed of. I have seen a few maintained with changes of ink and handwriting indicating that they were not compiled at one go, but kept as a running memorial, probably on display in the church. It's a shame that more did not survive because they usually have more information. I don't think I have seen 2 with the same style though, so there were probably a few sources of blanks as well as getting one drawn up locally. |

That would explain the Ettrick Roll as a specific church memorial was never raised and so this Roll of Honour would have been kept. _________________

Yes, I can just make out "Unveiled on" and "by" but not the name or date. _________________

I've not bothered posting these images before since they aren't that good but it seems to be a similar, smaller version of the Newcastlton / Clunie RoHs
It is the Dornoch Cathdral Roll of Honour. Deaths are listed in blue and underlined. The Roll of Honour is in a photo frame which stands on a table. I take it the colours have faded and it was in fact as colourful as the others originally.

I hope David wont mind but I'm posting one of his images. It is the Livingston Roll of Honour now hanging in the Almond Valley Heritage Centre.
A black and white version of the Newcastlton / Clunie Rolls

This images is from Jim McGinlay's Careston thread:
Is it a copy since it is black and white?
