Fortrose & Rosemarkie - Ross & Cromarty
UKNIWM Ref no. 44797

The Fortrose war memorial takes the form of an arched gateway leading into the grounds of the Cathedral (ruins). The commemorations and names of the dead of the two world wars are listed on two bronze tablets.

The garden of remembrance should certainly be a separate memorial under the normal UKNIWM guidelines, but it is not listed (either separately or with Fortrose main memorial).

The memoral got his unusual forename correct but made him a Mac.

He was born O'Kian John McLennan in Bracadale in 1877, he was married at Avoch as O'Kain McLennan in 1905 when a Lance Corporal in the 1st Gordon Highlanders and stationed in Cork, Ireland.

"Lance-Corporal C.F. Smith, who was the youngest son of Mr J. Smith, retired merchant, Fortrose, had been abroad for several years, and shortly after the war broke out he gave up his position in Buenos Aires and came home to give his services to his country, joining the county Territorial regiment, and was sent out to France at the beginning of the year."
