Carnoustie - Angus District
UKNIWM Ref no. 2035

The Carnoustie war memorial takes the form of the freestone full scale sculpture of a soldier mourning over a grave which surmounts a high pedestal. The pedestal is made of dressed sandstone and is flanked by curving walls bearing the granite tablets listing gthe names of the dead, and terminating in pylons. The memorial stands on a raised area approached by two curving stairs on either side.
The sculptor was T. Beattie of Edinburgh.
The monument stands in the memorial gardens in the High Street.

Jamie,

Do you have any further information on the sculptor "T. Beattie of Edinburgh"?

Could this be Thomas Beattie, the father of William F.Beattie I've featured here?:

Hello Derek,
Yes I would assume the mason was Thomas Beattie. Sir Robert Lorimer had a few favoured artists including Thomas Beattie, Joseph Hayes and Louis Reid Deuchars who set themeselves up in a converted church at 4 Belford Road in Edinburgh before the war, working on Lorimer projects. Since Beattie was the sculptor I wouldn't then be surprised if Lorimer was the architect for Carnoustie but I havn't managed to confirm that yet.
Also its interesting how very similar in style the Carnoustie highlander is to the one at the Glenelg memorial by Louis Reid Deuchars which makes me wonder if Deuchars perhaps executed the sketch model for this soldier from which Beattie has scaled up and carved the life size sculpture.

With reference to a previous post speculating about the likely architect, the Dictionary of Scottish Architects credits this memorial to James Prain Bruce and George Christie Morton, who at that time (1925) were the active architects in the firm Bruce, Son & Morton. Bruce lived in the town, which might well have helped secure the commission; but one could imagine that their chances of selection where done no harm by the firm’s only previous war memorial, the rather eye-catching park gates in Meigle (built in 1921).

THE SEARCH is on for the descendents of Carnoustie’s two First World War heroes.

Plaques commemorating the actions of Lance Corporal Jarvis and Petty Officer Samson were refurbished and moved to the Carnoustie War Memorial at the beginning of the year.

Lance Corporal Jarvis (33), 57th Field Company, Royal Engineers, was awarded the Victoria Cross for his actions at the Battle of Mons in August, 1914, when he demolished a bridge while under heavy German fire for an hour and half.

A native of Fraserburgh, he and his family moved to Rattray and then to Carnoustie.

Charles completed his education at Carnoustie School and was confirmed at Holyrood Church.

He died in Dundee in 1948 at the age of 67 and is buried at Cupar Cemetery, Fife.

Petty Officer George Mackenzie Samson (26), Royal Naval Reserve, won his Victoria Cross after rescuing and treating dozens of his comrades aboard HMS Clyde during the disastrous amphibious assault at V Beach in Gallipoli on April 25, 1915.

He was a native of Carnoustie and returned to the Merchant Marine following his war service.

He died aboard SS Strombbus in February, 1923, and is buried at the Methodist Cemetery, St George’s, Bermuda.

Do we have the Jarvis grave on SWGP?
