Adjacent the main road in the village (entering from the Meigle side)

On the rear it states it was erected by public subscription.
On the base it reads;
"Designed by George Carnegie Dundee
Built by John Gray & Sons Newtyle
AD 1920"

Alfred Andersons book tells that the memorial was restored and the names of the fallen from WW1 & WW2 mixed together and listed alphabetically.

Very unusual for the names to be mixed up from the 2 wars though I suppose it would only be during a restoration that this could be considered.
Any idea if the names were originally listed on metal plaques as well?

From Alfred's book:-

"Inevitably, we spent some time at the war memorial. Alfred was at its unveiling in 1920. There is something odd about it since the original plaques were removed. The replacements, after the Second World War, combined the names of all those who had died in both wars, in alphabetical order. It contains twenty-eight names in all. After he had laid a wreath on Armistice day in 2001, he (Alfred) complained of the state of the memorial and its surroundings. As with the broom handles in the Second World War, Alfred got his way and it has been cleaned up".

*Broom handles refers to the time he was principal traniner of the Home Guard during WW2 and refused to train his men with the brooms preferring to concentrate on foot drill until their rifles arrived.

The following article reveals the names of the dead from the Great War;

NEWTYLE WAR MEMORIAL UNVEILED

A monument in the form of an obelisk about 19 feet high, to commemorated the men of Newtyle who fell in the Great War, was unveiled on Saturday by the Earl of Strathmore. On the two sides are the following names: DAVID ANDERSON, ROBERT BAIN, DUNCAN BEATON, GEO. BELL, ALEX. BROWN, ANDREW CANT, FRANK COUPER, JAMES COUPER, ALEX. FLEMING, FRED GEEKIE, R.J.H. JOHNSTONE, JOHN M'KENZIE, W. M'LAREN, ANDREW M'QUEEN, JAS. M'QUEEN, GEO. MANN, BENJ. MILNE, ALEX. MILLAR, DAVID MITCHELL, ALEX. SPENCE.

Headed by Pipe-Major A. Lamond, a procession of Boy Scouts, ex-soldiers, and the general public marched to the site of the memorial. Rev. Robert Wood, Parish Church, presided at the unveiling ceremony, and a prayer was offered by Rev. Walker, U.F. Church.

The Earl of Strathmore, in unveiling the monument, said that, though not large and elaborate, it was simple, chaste, and pure, and was worthy of being a lasting memory of those who freely gave their lives for their country.

Rev. W. Maxwell, Dundee, formerly of Newtyle, then engaged in prayer. After the Benediction "The Last Post" was sounded by Pte. W. Anderson, 6th Black Watch, and the National Anthem was sung.

Among the many spectators was Mr Robert Fenwick, aged 84, whose medals showed him to be a Crimean Veteran.

The whole of the work on the memorial was done by Messrs Gray & Sons, Newtyle.

Puzzled me too. In his day Sir Charles would have been one of the best-known and influential business people in Scotland, if not the whole of Britain. Not only sitting MP but also titled major landowner and director of what was then the largest merchant shipping fleet in the world. He also served in France with the 19th Royal Hussars from 1916-18. Hard to see how he could be simply 'missed'...

I'm assuming that Sir Charles died "naturally".
