Bridge of Weir - Renfrew District

The Bridge of Weir war memorial is a tall grey granite celtic cross on a rustic pedestal. The commemorations and names of the dead are set out in lead lettering on the faces of the pedestal. It is one of only a few Scottish WWI war memorials which has pictish carvings in shallow relief on both sides of the cross shaft, depicting warriors and hunting scenes.
The monument stands at the junction of the Main Road and Prieston Road at the eastern edge of the village.
The commemorations on the pedestal read:
THEY WHOM THIS MONUMENT
COMMEMORATES WERE NUMBERED
AMONG THOSE WHO AT THE CALL
OF KING AND COUNTRY LEFT ALL THAT
WAS DEAR TO THEM, ENDURED
HARDNES, FACED DANGER, AND
FINALLY PASSED OUT OF THE
SIGHT OF MEN BY THE PATH OF DUTY
AND SELF SACRIFICE, GIVING UP
THEIR OWN LIVES THAT OTHERS
MIGHT LIVE IN FREEDOM.
LET THOSE WHO COME AFTER SEE TO IT
THAT THEIR NAME BE NOT FORGOTTEN

"THEY WERE MEN IN THE MIGHT OF THEIR MANHOOD
OR BOYS IN THE BEAUTY OF YOUTH
BUT THEY HELD ALL AS DUST IN THE BALANCE
TO BATTLING FOR FREEDOM AND TRUTH"

The story of the WW1 names on the Bridge of Weir memorial is now available from Birlinn. "Supreme Sacrifice: A Small Village and the Great War". Amazon has copies too. Nice reviews in "Undiscovered Scotland" and "The Scotsman". The book is accompanied by the website which has all the source information in as much detail as can be made available. http://www.bridgeofweirmemorial.co.uk/index.html

A 70th WW1 name is reported to have been added in 2014. Do we know who that additional casualty was, please?

The name that was added in October 2014 following representations of family members to Renfrewshire Council was:

PTE WILLIAM McCLURE R. INNIS. FUS.
