There were many coastal and fishing communities around Scotland whose war memorial took the form of a tall tower which provided sailors with a useful point of bearing when returning to harbour.

My thanks to Stephen Henning for the following photos.

According to him the memorial is located "on the plateau part of Anstruther Golf Course adjacent to the second green."

SS Cameronia was torpedoed by German U-boat U-33 in the Mediterranean Sea, east of Malta, whilst conveying over 2,600 allied troops bound for Alexandria, Egypt. She sank in 40 minutes.
Cameronia was originally built for the Anchor Line's transatlantic service by D. and W. Henderson and Company at Glasgow, 1911.
She was requisitioned as a troopship in January, 1917.
