(Glasgow Herald 9th of January 1915)
"Mr John Campbell, farmer, Culnaskeath, in the Novar district, has received news of the death of his son, Sergeant Peter Campbell, of the 1st Seaforths. He was killed on December 20, after a hand to hand encounter with a party of Germans, four of whom he placed hors de combat before he fell. He was 27 years of age and had been for eight years with the Seaforths in India, going to France with the Indian contingent, and receiving promotion from Corporal to Sergeant for distinguished service in the field."

"9216 Lance-Sergeant Campbell, P. 1st Battalion Seaforth Highlanders - For conspicuous gallantry and ability on December 20, 1914. at Givenchy, in the able manner in which he assisted with only two other men in holding a traverse and keeping back a bomb-throwing party of the enemy. Subsequently he attacked the enemy with bombs and rifle fire, killing a number of them."
