Patna - Cumnock & Doon Valley District

The Patna war memorial is a simple grey granite obelisk which stands on the edge of a hill above the cemetery overlooking the village. Access is by a steep five minute climb up the grass hill which isn't particularly convenient but I think there may be reasons for this. The obelisk design seem to have been commonly favoured for war memorials in the South West of Scotland. I think this also seems to have been a common design used for Covenanter Memorials erected in the 18th and 19th centuries (often sited in lonely hill tops and moorland locations marking where Conventicles were held and sometimes surprised by government troopers). The austere simplicity of the obelisk would have suited the puritan ideal and also the design originates in Ancient Egypt and perhaps this also was felt to be in keeping with the values of the Old Testement. I think it might perhaps be the case that this design (and the typical desolate location of these monuments) had become part of the shared cultural heritage of the area by the 20th century and was the obvious choice for many communities when they came to commemorate those lost in the Great War.

I visited this memorial yesterday (and got very muddy getting to and from the memorial). There is quite a bit of work going on, the railings have been removed and will need new ones if they are being replaced. The area around the base is being rebuilt with new paving stones.
