2nd Lt. Walter McFarlane Coulter, High.L.I.

For conspicuous gallantry and devotion
to duty during a raid on the enemy's
trenches. He led hia men with great dash
and the success of the raid was largely due
to his personal coolness and initiative. He
has on many previous occasions done fine
work.

On Saturday at our Open Day at the Mitchell we had a visit from Jim Hastie of Queen's Park Football Club.
The club will be celebrating its 150th anniversary in 2017 and they are compiling a booklet titled Queen's Park and the Great War see here:- www.queensparkfc.co.uk and hope to have it completed by then.
Jim was wondering if anyone in the SMRG could provide further information on any of the names that appear in the booklet.
If anyone has information could they please post it on this thread and it will be passed on to Jim Hastie or one of his colleagues Frank McCrossan.

Born in Dundee on 15th December 1886 to John&Jeannie McLintock McCrae,Roslin Cottage,Clepington Road.Brothers Boyd, John and Lawrie.Father was a Gas Engineer.
Family moved to 25 Strawberrybank and Andrew was educated at the High School of Dundee where he was a Polack prizeman.He was a student at St Andrews taking an MA in 1908 and then in Edinburgh where he gained his LLB in 1911.He joined Messrs Gair&Gibson,Solicitors,Falkirk and became a Law Agent.Keen golfer,particularly at Crail where his parents subsequently lived at Rosemount.
Played football for Falkirk FC as an amateur when they won the Scottish Cup and then Queen`s Park FC.
He joined the Lovat Scouts as a private in October 1914 and was promoted to Corporal and then acting Sergeant.Died of wounds at Suvla Bay,Gallipoli.
Commemorated on the Memorials at Crail,Clan Macrae at Eilan Donan,High School of Dundee,St Andrews&Edinburgh Universities.Queen`s Park FC.

The Glasgow Herald, Tuesday, October 30th., 1917 (page 6):-
"Private Alexander McLean, one of the hon. joint treasurers of Queen's Park Football Club, died in a Glasgow military hospital yesterday of illness contracted on service. In civil life, Mr McLean, who was 38 years of age, was on the office staff of Messrs. Mitchell Bros. (Limited), whisky and wine merchant, Waterloo Street."

Same publication, day, date, Deaths on Service notice:-
"MACLEAN.- At Ruchill Hospital on the 29th inst., Private Alexander ----an, Scottish Rifles, late of 10 Albert Road, ----hill. Funeral on Wednesday from 11 ----- Gardens, Langside, to Cathcart Cemetery, ----; --- of attending kindly --- James Henderson Ltd., 47 Cambridge Street."

On the Soldiers Effects Register the date is a couple of days "off" (31/10/17) but his death is noted to be "after discharge" so I'm pretty sure it is him.
His legatee is his brother Angus.

Mr. J. WILSON - Killed. Mrs Alex. Wilson of the Eglinton Hotel, Kilwinning, has received official intimation that her eldest son, Second Lieutenant James Wilson, was killed in action on December 15. Lieutenant Wilson joined the Argyle and Sutherland Highlanders about two years ago and went to the front last year. He was afterwards transferred to the Black Watch and eventually to the R. S. F. Lieutenant Wilson was 22 years of age and was educated at Irvine Academy. He was a member of Queens Park F. C."

Captain Walter M’Farlane Coulter, Highland Light Infantry (killed) was the grandson of Mrs. M’Farlane, Sunnyside, Mansewood, Glasgow. He was a former pupil of Glasgow High School and prior to joining the Army in September 1914, he was employed in the drawing office at Fairfield Shipping and Engineering Company. In the beginning of the present year, Captain Coulter was awarded the Military Cross. For several seasons he played half-back for Queen’s Park Football Club and he was also a playing member of the Poloc Cricket Club.

Southern Press, 1st June 1917. ‘Captain Coulter Killed’
Provisionally reported missing, now officially reported killed. Captain Coulter was a grandson of Mrs. Walter M’Farlane, Mansewood, Pollokshaws.He was educated at Thornliebank School and Glasgow High School and served his apprenticeship with Messrs. John Dalgliesh and Sons, Pollokshaws. When he enlisted he was employed in the drawing office of the Fairfield Shipbuilding and Engineering Co., Govan. Captain Coulter, who was 27 years of age, was well-known in football circles, having played for Queen’s Park. He was also a playing member of Poloc Cricket Club. In march, he was awarded the Military Cross.

I learnt a ton of 'new' stuff researching the above Walter McFarlane Coulter only to find at the end of it ..... it wasn't the Walter Coulter I was looking for!

Still, it's now added to both Queen's Park F.C. and Glasgow High School's threads, so not time gone to waste.
