Both these men are listed on CWGC as JOHN Carmichael.

They were brothers, so highly unlikely to have the same name?

Possibly a case where the name Ian (which is usually a variant of John) has been presumed to be John when it was actually Ian.

MacDONALD, Alistair Stewart, M.M
Born 3rd July 1908
Died 26th September 1972

MacDonald had served in the TA for ten years, and was employed as a bus driver when he re-enlisted on 23/8/39. He was captured on 7th June 1940 and escaped seven days later. He arrived in Gourock by ship from Bilbao on 28th July 1940.

There is a five page account of his escape held at the National Archives.
