This memorial was erected in front of Bank School, unveiled on 20/8/1923.
It is of grey Scotch Grantie and weights nearly 2 ton. A piece of Celtic ornamentation is carved on the front. Designed and erected by Beattie & Co., Carlisle.

Born New Cumnock; enlisted New Cumnock.

1901 Census records McSephney family living at 18, Craigbank, New Cumnock. Head of household Richard McSephney (37), Coal Miner, born Dalmellington; Jane McSephney (41), wife, born Sanquhar, Dumfriess. David McSephney is the eldest child in family at 14, labourer.

Every other name is in alphabetical order. He was very nearly forgotten, or so it would appear. Well done to he/she who did the right thing.

JOHN JARVIE - not a "school lad" but a teacher.

Named on the Canonbie War Memorial in Dumfriesshire as:

SEC. LIEUT. JOHN JARVIE K.O.S.B.
John Jarvie – age 30 – Second Lieutenant, 7th/8th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
John was headmaster at Glenzier School, Canonbie when he enlisted as Sergeant (21287) in the 13th Royal Scots in early 1915. He landed with his battalion in France in July 1915 and was promoted to Company Sergeant Major before he was commissioned in the KOSB in November 1916. He began his teaching career in Kilsyth Academy in Stirlingshire and then moved to Bank School in New Cumnock, Ayrshire before coming to Canonbie in September 1913. John died of multiple wounds in the 12th Stationary Hospital at St. Pol.
Born 1886 in Bainsford, Falkirk, Stirlingshire. Son of Archibald and Agnes Brechin (Myles) Jarvie, of Craigmarloch, Kilsyth, Stirlingshire. Husband of Jessie Foster (Gillespie) Jarvie of Ingleston, New Cumnock, Ayrshire who he married in 1913 in New Cumnock.
Died of Wounds on 17 April 1917 and buried in St. Pol Communal Cemetery Extension, France.
Also named on the Kilsyth Burgh War Memorial, on the near-by Banton Village War Memorial, on the Bank School memorial in New Cumnock and on an individual memorial formerly in Glenzier School, Canonbie.
