I've never seen a memorial with so many surnames to my own - 13 Robertsons are listed here.

Does that mean you're from Fife stock then?

It's a fine looking memorial though, well looked after as well.

There seem to be a large number of names added on the third panel. I wonder why that was?

Note that Alan P Beveridge has a rose after his MC. If you look up CWGC it confirms that this stands for a bar to his Military Cross

Name: BEVERIDGE, ALAN PRIMROSE
Initials: A P
Nationality: United Kingdom
Rank: Major
Regiment/Service: Royal Garrison Artillery
Unit Text: 35th Heavy Bty.
Age: 21
Date of Death: 16/09/1918
Awards: M C and Bar
Additional information: Son of Henry and Jane T. Beveridge, Pitreavie Castle, Dunfermline.
Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead
Grave/Memorial Reference: West end, 3.
Cemetery: VRAIGNES COMMUNAL CEMETERY

Note also that Major Beveridge's family owned Pitreavie Castle. Looking up Pitreavie Castle it was bought by Mill owner Henry Beveridge in 1885 and sold to the Air Ministry in 1938.

Whilst the near lip of a crater, caused by the explosion of a large enemy mine, was being consolidated, Actg. Serjt. Erskine rushed out under continuous fire with utter disregard of danger and rescued a wounded serjeant and a private. Later, seeing his officer, who was believed to be dead, show signs of movement, he ran out to him, bandaged his head, and remained with him for fully an hour, though repeatedly fired at, whilst a shallow trench was being dug to them. He then assisted in bringing in his officer, shielding him with his own body in order to lessen the chance of his being hit again."

THE STRATHEARN HERALD: 16.09.1916
DUNFERMLINE BOY HERO
ENLISTED AT 14, KILLED AT 16

"You have lost a son, and we have lost a gallant soldier", writes an officer commanding a battalion of the Gordon Highlanders in France to Mr David James Dickson, Chalmers Street, Dunfermline, in regard to his eldest son, Private David Gordon Dickson, the circumstances of whose death provide one of the most shocking incidents of the war. After the outbreak of hostilities deceased was engaged as a Boy Scout messenger at Leven, and he enlisted in the Royal Scots, representing his age to be 17, whereas he was only 14. Fifteen months later his father brought him out by acquainting the military authorities as to his real age, but the lad manifested great restlessness when back in civil life, and only three weeks elapsed when he disappeared. He had been in France two months with the Gordon Highlanders before his parents were able to trace him. His father again wrote as to his age, but the letter unfortunately reached the commanding officer two days after the lad was killed, or he would have been withdrawn from the firing line. The deceased was a nephew of Mr Robert Dickson, municipal bandmaster, Crieff.

*Born 24th May, 1900 at Shottstown, Penicuik

for anyone interested in researching this memorial, the Dunfermline Journal covering the period of WW1 is available online at Ancestry - you need a subscription of course. If you just want to check one or two specific entries then send me a PM but I have to limit the offer otherwise it would be a full time job Laughing
