Hawick - St.Cuthbert's Episcopalian Church
UKNIWM Ref: 44266
OS map ref: NT 501 141
To the men of St. Cuthbert's who gave 1918 and the 1939-1945 wars, two brasses are inserted in the wall immediately below the fine memorial window, unveiled in July 1921. It was eminently fitting that the sons of St.Cuthbert's who gave their lives should be commemorated by a stained-glass window of two lights, designed and executed by Henry Payne of Amberley, Gloucestershire. The theme of the window is "Christ's Victory over Death".
The brass containing the names of the who fell in the First World War was unveiled by T.Lindsay Watson, Esq., senior churchwarden, then the oldest active member of the congregation. The Roll of Honour was read by Captain The Right Honourable the Earl of Minto, the Scots Guards.
In Febuary 1954 there was unveiled by Lord Polwarth a second brass commemorating the men of St. Cuthbert's who laid down their lives in the Second World War. The prayer of dedication was recited by Canon Hay. Lieut.-Col. R. Scott-Watson read the names of the men commemorated.

The soldiers' faces look very life-like. Based on real people known by the artist ? |
