Balgonie - Kirkcaldy District
The Balgonie war memorial is a freestone monument in the syle of a churchyard cross with a low square pedestal set on three steps. The monument stands in the Main Street next to the Victoria Hall.
The monument is actually dedicated to the men of 'Balgonie Colliery and Estate' and I would take the inclusion of the word 'Estate' to qualify this as a civic memorial. The Royal British Legion Scotland has included it in its list of community memorials. The inscription at the front of the pedestal reads:
TO THE GLORY
OF GOD
AND IN MEMORY OF
THOSE WHO WENT FORTH
FROM BALGONIE COLLIERY
AND ESTATE AND GAVE
THEIR LIVES FOR THEIR
COUNTRY 1914-1919
