The West Side Memorial stands in the village of Bragar, along the main A858 road, between the Whalebone Arch and the sideroad leading to the village cemetery. It is located outside the village meeting hall.

The memorial was inaugurated in October 2005. Unfortunately, the paint has already started to flake off the lettering in places, testimony to the harsh conditions in Lewis.

The plaques are mounted on the inside of this circle.

Would anybody have any background on L. MACPHAIL, QAIMNS, died 1943 listed on the North Bragar Panel.

Nothing on CWGC or SNWM. Grateful for any info.

Tony

Tony,

Apologies for the transcription error, it is in fact E Macphail, not L Macphail. The print on the memorial is beginning to wear off, affecting legibility. We are talking about:

Sister/Lieutenant EFFIE MACPHAIL
Last address in Lewis: 24 North Bragar
Daughter of Donald and Effie Macphail, of Stornoway, Isle of Lewis.
Service: Queen Alexandra's Imperial Military Nursing Service
Service number: 257414
Date of death: 8 November 1943 at the age of 30
Killed in Nonshera, India,
Interred: Karachi War Cemetery, grave 11. A. 7
Local memorial: West Side, Bragar

A tribute to Sister Effie Macphail was printed in the Stornoway Gazette of 26 November 1943. A transcription is posted here
